MARINE INSURANCE COMMUNITY GATHER IN LEEDS TO CONSIDER WAR RISKS

28/04/2023

Members of the marine insurance business community gathered in Leeds on Thursday, April 27, for the Leeds Marine Insurance Association’s Annual Workshop, chaired by Myton Law’s John Habergham.

More than 30 marine insurance professionals from across the North met to consider war risks including three key topics: cargo, including the Five Powers clause; hull and protection & indemnity (P&I); and political risk/political violence/terrorism.

With the situation in Ukraine and the tension in the Far East between China and Taiwan, the workshop could not have been more topical.

During the day at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds, delegates heard from independent Lloyd’s of London specialist global wholesale insurance broker Price Forbes & Partners, part of the Ardonagh Specialty Group.

Established in 1992, the Leeds Marine Insurance Association (LMIA) is an association of insurance companies, brokers, loss adjusters, marine surveyors and members of the legal profession all specialising in underwriting, broking or claims relating to marine, cargo and freight.

Although the Association has ‘Leeds’ in its title, its membership is drawn from the marine and goods in transit insurance community in the North with members from Bradford, Hull, Manchester, North Lincolnshire and Lloyds of London.

LMIA chair shipping lawyer John Habergham of Myton Law said, “After a few fallow years due to the pandemic it was good to gather again for the LMIA annual workshop.

“The LMIA’s aims include maintaining the city of Leeds as a principal regional market for marine, aviation and goods in transit insurance, facilitating cooperation between members and providing opportunities for education for those involved in marine insurance.  The workshop supported those objectives.  I am delighted that it was so well supported by attendees and thank not just all those LMIA members who helped to make it happen but especially Price Forbes for speaking.”
