In a notable case involving the interpretation of force majeure clauses, MUR and RTI entered a contract for monthly shipments of bauxite from Guinea to Ukraine, with payments in US dollars. Following the imposition of US sanctions on RTI's majority owner, United Company Rusal Plc, MUR invoked force majeure, citing the inability to receive dollar payments. RTI’s offer to pay in Euros was refused by MUR, leading to a legal dispute.
