SHEFFIELD SEMINAR TO LOOK AT PROBLEM OF INSURANCE FRAUD

09/07/2021

Insurance fraud, acknowledged as an on-going problem, is the topic of the Insurance Institute of Sheffield’s Tuesday, July 20, seminar ‘Fraud and insurance law – the state of play’ to be given by specialist insurance lawyer John Habergham of Myton Law.

The importance of the issue meant that when Parliament reviewed insurance contract law with two pieces of legislation, The Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 and The Insurance Act 2015, which came into effect in April 2013 and August 2016, it took the opportunity to address fraud.

Having had time to bed down, it is now possible to look at how courts have interpreted the legislation in cases of insurance fraud, says Myton Law’s John Habergham.  His one-hour seminar will look at fraud and insurance law in the context of both consumers and businesses in light of court case outcomes and his own experience of representing insurance companies and brokers.

Free to members of the Sheffield Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII), this is set to be the Institute’s first post lockdown live event and is scheduled to take place at the AMP Technology Centre, Rotherham, two miles from Sheffield city centre and close to the M1, subject to Government restrictions.

With around 1,400 members and opportunities to meet in person not having been possible for the last year, the Institute’s CPD Secretary, Lauren Walker of insurer Proaktive, expects the 50-capacity event to fill up quickly.

Myton Law provides specialist insurance, shipping, rail and logistics legal services for clients in the Yorkshire region, across the UK and beyond, from its Hull offices overlooking the River Humber.  The firm’s expertise also includes commercial property, renewables and international trade law.

Sheffield CII members can visit the Institute website to register for the seminar.
